I’ve been reading The Mothman Prophecies by John Keel. That’s a very strange book.
Apparently, in Point Pleasant West Viriginia about 30 years ago, there were some very strange occurrences. For a little over a year, the town was plagued with strange lights, MIB, UFO sightings, and a huge winged monster with red eyes.. among other things. (Yes, that’s really just the tip of the iceburg.)
Everyone in the town saw these things. Police officers, newspaper reporters, housewives, even a retired Army major.
Entities speaking through distorted phone lines and out of plumbing fixtures whispered dire warnings and accurate predictions to people of the town.
One year and one month after the first sighting, the Silver Bridge crossing the Ohio River collapsed into the waters, and the last and most obscure prediction became reality.
After the bridge disaster, the all strange activity in the town ceased. Abruptly.
What the hell was going on?
I still haven’t arrived at an explanation that I am comfortable with.
However, I did get some things to think about.
John Keel has some very interesting and rather unusual ideas and theories about UFOs, ghosts, etc.
How about.. ponder this if you will: Suppose these entities are from THIS planet? Suppose they’ve been here all along and they just like to pop up and play mind games with us once in awhile?
Charles Fort believed that Earth did not belong to mankind, but that it is a type of game reserve, and we are the game.
That’s kind of unsettling.
If we’re the main exhibit in some kind of zoo, the question becomes, who are the zookeepers?
I think we should have a poll about this. *ahem* (Read: It’s time for a new poll.)
But read The Mothman Prophecies, because it’s interesting. Read the book before you see the movie, because the movie sucks.
Oh, and did I mention how that book came to be in my possession? No?
A customer came into my store on Monday. He put the book on the counter. When he came to pay for his purchases, he pointed at the book and said to me, “See that book? That copy is yours.” I don’t know the man, and I’d never heard of the book until then.
Weird, huh?

Your wish is my command. BTW, you can attach your own custom polls to submitted stories, but I thought this one would go best on the front page, so there it is. Vote early, vote often.

That’s really interesting. I love how the guy gave you the book. Now I’m tempted to do something like that. I don’t know that I could resist being a little less subtle, though. I’d probably do something like “It’s come to my attention that you may find this useful in the times to come.”

And if he had said that to me when he gave it to me.. Eesh. After I had read it I’d probably never sleep again.
