Well, GNOME 2.2 is out. It’s definitely the best GNOME release to date. GNOME is moving in the direction of making things work and work well, right out of the box. There’s still a lot of work to be done, and some people will complain about missing features, but GNOME 2.2 is a very usable desktop and very clean. Here’s what my desktop looks like. There are a few pieces I really want to see in the coming months:

  • New file selector that has shortcuts and understands the mime-system
  • On a related note, a new mime-system ;)
  • Features like thumbnailing of video, fontilus, etc. to work out of the box or be easily turned on–shouldn’t have to edit configuration files by hand for these features
  • More apps that are fully integrated with GNOME 2.2 and ported:
    • Web browser (galeon, epiphany?)
    • IRC/instant messenger (gaim, xchat, gnomechat?)
    • Office suite (openoffice, gnome office)
    • Rhythmbox stablized
    • A good p2p file sharing program
    • Mono 1.0

What are your thoughts?
