For many years I’ve thought it would be neat to have a miniature horse as a pet. That is, a domesticated and smaller version of a horse–say, about the size of a cat. To give you an idea of what one might look like, check out this picture. Of course in that particular picture, it’s just an illusion. The chair and table are oversized and the horses are normal sized horses. Still, wouldn’t it be fun to have a small horse galloping around your apartment or house, standing on its hind legs, “Neeighhh!!!” Anyway, just a thought. Geneticists, you have your mission.

  2. we got a ticket last week and have to go to court in this little town of 300 people. all because we bought a miniature baby pony and they have since passed a law no animals other than domesticated ones can be here+. was told when we bought it, it was considered such. What if anything we can do to prove this is a pet and not what they consider a horse and nusience,I may add lots of people in this town have farm animals..have to go to court tomorrow so Im desperate.I just cant give my baby back..

  3. Hi,

    Please help spread the word.

Every year hundreds of horses are stolen with many ending up at an equine slaughter house. There owners grieve terrible not knowing what ever happened to their pet horse. If we can ban slaughter many fewer horses will be stolen for slaughter as evidenced in CA when the banned slaughter in 1998 and theft of horses dropped 34%. Please help if you can.

My name is Tom and together with my wife Julia own and operate The Laughing Horse Sanctuary a 501(c)3 non-profit equine rescue.

I am asking your help in stopping our American horses from being slaughtered in three foreign owned slaughter houses in IL and TX. There meat is being shipped overseas as a delicacy for the Italians, French, Japanese etc.

This year over 60,000 healthy American horses will be slaughtered and they are not old crippled or blind horses. (It is against federal law to ship a blind or crippled horse). The slaughter industry will not take old skinny horses. The horses being slaughtered range in age from six months to 13 years of age.

If you think horse slaughter is wrong, or you just want more information on horse slaughter so you can make an informed decision about it please contact me. Polls across America show that 74%-90% of people are opposed to horses being slaughtered.

Currently there are bills in both the House and the Senate (HR 857 and S2352) that would ban the slaughter of horses for human consumption and the transport of horseflesh or live horses out of the country for the purpose of slaughter. HR 857 currently has 226 co-sponsors, over half the House, but is being held up in the Agriculture Committee by Bob Goodlate, VA Congressman Sixth District. If allowed to the floor for a vote it would pass today.

Please contact me and I will explain why horse slaughter is so wrong in so many ways. Contact your Congressman and Senators and ask them to co-sponsor this important legislation.

If you can’t actively support this battle against horse slaughter Please consider a 100% tax deductible contribution to:

  4. You eat cows, right? So other people eat horses! The issue of legality is one thing, but getting all righteous because eating horse meat is not part of American culture is another. Do you think for one second that the way they slaughter calves to get veal is any less brutal or awful than whatever your problem is with the horse-slaughtering? If you really want to rescue some horses, why don’t you try to stop fat tourists from taking those hansom cab rides here through Central Park? Frankly, I’d be more concerned about sponsoring a bill that regulates the slaughter of cows, chickens, and pigs — if you want something that really turns your stomach, why don’t you find out a little more about how that T-Bone gets on your plate and a little less about what’s going on in Europe. FYI, horse meat is terrible anyway.

I’m all for mini-horses… you know they’re using mini-horses instead of seeing eye dogs to assist the visually impaired now? They are between 2-4 feet tall. Not as small as a cat, but definitely getting there. I’d give mine dreadlocks.

  5. I was thinking of buying a mini as a pet for my backyard. I am 12 and have a 6 year old AQH gelding. I do 4-H and know A LOT about horses. Minis ofcourse are my fav. breed and I was wondering, how big does a mini’s paddock have to be?
