So we had a holiday to celebrate freedom and stuff. Mine went okay. I bought some patio furniture and torches Thursday night in preparation for the party Friday. (I’ve come to the conclusion that Summer is too expensive. I’ve spent over $400 in the last couple weeks on things related to “Summer Fun”–camping equipment, patio furniture, beer, meat, summer clothes, beer…).

The party went pretty well, although I passed out earlier than expected (9:30pm or so). I guess that’s what happens when you start drinking at 3pm and 6 hours later have consumed 6 beers, 3 shots of captain (and coke), and a shot of bourbon. Maybe if I had started with the liquor…how’s that saying go? “beer before liquor, never sicker…liquor before beer, in the clear” or was it “beer before liquor, get drunk quicker…liquor before beer, shed a tear” or maybe “red sky at night, never sicker…” I can never remember how those go.

Saturday night I went bowling with Amy, Laura, and Ryan. I had forgotten how much I suck at bowling. I think I have a learning disabilty. I was on bowling leagues (2) for about 9 months. Previous to that I was on a Summer league. I still suck. I’ve been playing chess since highschool, going to clubs, reading chess books, even have had a few lessons from a strong player. I still suck. I’ve gotten drunk to the point of being sick more times than I can count and yet I still haven’t learned where my limit is. Come to think of it, I’m having a hard time thinking of anything I’ve actually learned in the past year or two.

Sunday afternoon I went out to buy some camping trip in preparation for the float trip, then finally went off to go do some reading at Kaldi’s. I’m about 1/3 of the way through A Brief History of Time. I think I’m coming to the conclusion that, while fascinating, I will never understand certain ideas such as particles sometimes acting as particles and sometimes acting as waves with wave functions and probabilities of position/velocity rather than actually having a definite position/velocity. Just because we can’t measure the particle’s exact position without disturbing its velocity, how does that mean it doesn’t have a definite position? Because when we shoot it at a couple slits in a piece of cardboard it goes through both of them at the same time? And what’s up with that anyway? Or how you can add time to the 3 dimensions of space and get something called space-time which really is no different than space, only with an extra spatial dimension. How is time the same as space? I thought time was money. I think my wallet is collapsing in on itself and as Penrose showed, it must end in a singularity where the warping of time-money is infinite.

As I read over this entry, I realize it may come across somewhat negatively to the reader, and so I want to make it clear that I did, in fact, have a rather enjoyable weekend.

Update Mon Jul 7 13:41:26 CDT 2003:
Adam pointed out that the correct adage is “beer before liquor, give it to me quicker, liquor before beer, yes give it here.”

  1. Actually, Adam the saying goes like this:

“Liquor before beer, in the clear, beer before liquor, even sicker.” How’s that for a nursery rhyme?

  2. I heard it as such:
“Beer before liquor, never sicker, liquor before beer, have no fear”

  3. I liked the one from Will & Grace, “Beer before Wine, makes you feel fine, Wine before Beer, makes you feel queer.”
