My family and I ate Thanksgiving dinner at some friends’ house. I got to see my parents’ new house they’re building. It’s coming along nicely. Haven’t been nearly as productive this weekend as I’d like to be. I had hoped to get a bunch of stuff done including lots of hacking on WoodPusher, but mostly I’ve spent the time off eating, going out, and sleeping. Last night I went to a martini party at Aqua Vin in Chesterfield. I enjoyed one $9 martini which I made last the whole time I was there. The music was lively so I couldn’t help but do a little dancing. I met some interesting people. After we left Aqua Vin we went to the Halo and Mike showed us one of the most simple and brilliant ideas I’ve ever seen for getting to know people at noisy bars. He brought along a sketch pad and a couple washable markers (the kind you used when you were a kid to make art for the fridge). He said he never goes to the bars without his pad and markers. The idea is that you can ask questions without having to shout. And it got everyone involved. He started with a question like:
What's your favourite thing about St. Louis? (a) The Zoo (b) The Arch (c) Cardinals (d) Ted Drewes (e) Write in:
He handed the pad to me and I wrote in “The Blues!” Then I passed the pad to the next person and they added something or checked off their choice, etc. We did question after question like that. We also taught each other bits of Chinese, French, Spanish, and Latin. Anyway, brilliant idea. I learned a lot about three people I just met…
