We had the book discussion on Darwin’s Ghost last night. Troy made a fine chili. Not bad for someone who claims he can’t cook. After the discussion I played around with Orkut. Yes, finally I’m one of the cool kids. It is somewhat addictive. After expanding my Orkut network I stayed up until 2am finishing The Da Vinci Code. Very interesting how Dan Brown interweaves a bit of fact with lots of fiction, speculation, and conspiracy theories. It also felt that this book was practically written to be made into a movie. It was a fun read nonetheless and has inspired me to dig into the real historical facts surrounding Christ, Mary Magdalene, and The Grail.

Da Vinci Code is maybe the worst book of 2003.
I don’t know if it is the cliffhangers that last two paragraphs, or the notion that any of the grail conspiracy is new. Its been floating around for decades.
I kept checking the back cover of Da Vinci Code to make sure it wasn’t a Hardy Boys or Nancy Drew novel, or directed at “young readers”.

I have to agree that the writing style after a while got a bit repetitious. Just about every chapter ends with a cliffhanger so you grow to expect it. And in many ways the tensions Brown tries to create is artificial and dissolves quickly. The story sort of builds up and builds up and then kind of fizzles at the end.
