Still pretty busy but I thought I’d take a minute to update.
Life:
I’m enjoying reading The Sparrow. It’s a very odd mix of Science fiction, philosophy, religion, and anthropology. I’ll say more once I’ve finished.
Work:
Working hard to get the Wizard complete. HTML sucks for writing user interfaces especially when you have to hack on Javascript to get certain client-side functionality. But it’s finally coming together. The VistaWiz V4 EdgeServer is going to be one slick product.
GNOME:
I installed GNOME 2.6 on my notebook. Fantastic. My favourite changes are the new file chooser and spatial nautilus.
Mono/Java Debate:
I’ve mostly stayed silent on this issue except to say why I love Mono/C#. What I want to make clear is that I wasn’t saying that because Mono is such a great platform it should be adopted by GNOME officially. Frankly at this stage I think it’s not necessary for the GNOME Project as a community to officially adopt a platform such as Mono or Java. It would be nice if we could improve things like documentation of the API’s that are available and improve support for languages such as python and C++. Ultimately it will be the vendors’ decisions on whether or not to ship Mono/Java and applications based on those platforms. It will be very interesting in the coming year as it seems very apparent that a large number of GNOME developers are extremely interested in Mono.
Innovation:
There are a good number of really cool ideas and projects that aren’t complete but that would be extremely cool in their completed form: Project Utopia, Storage, Dashboard, to name a few. I’m wondering if GNOME needs a better method of planning the future of the platform. Maybe I’m smoking crack and such a thing isn’t possible in the open source world, but it feels like we have a lot of raw talent, a lot of great ideas, but are we all putting our brains and hands together to make this happen and insure that it’s all integrated and completed in a reasonable timeframe?
By the way, I absolutely love Nat’s idea

How exactly did you install Gnome 2.6? Gnarnome, jhbuild, what? When I do it, I only want to try once.
