A lot of girls seem to want to play poker and enjoy home games, but seem intimidated by the male-dominated tournament scene. This is unfortunate because I think that women have a certain advantage over men. I, for one, have a much harder time getting a read on women than men. Probably this is because I am a guy and I know how guys think and I can often see right through their mind games at the table. Women, on the other hand, I don’t think I’ll ever understand. The other advantage that women have is that there is no shortage of arrogant, egotistical men out there, and poker is a prime example. These guys think they are invincible and don’t give other players respect or credit, least of all some “girl.” But remember, “Pride goeth before a fall.” I’ve seen these guys time after time play horribly simply because they don’t give another player credit. So take him down, girls! If my encouragement isn’t enough, maybe the news that Annie Duke, professional poker player and mother of four won the World Series of Poker Tournament of Champions will be. She beat some of the world’s best: Howard Lederer, Phil Ivey, Chip Reese, Doyle Brunson, TJ Cloutier, Greg Raymer, Johnny “fuckin” Chan, Daniel Negreanu, and thank God: Phil Hellmuth.
Update: Just noticed that Annie Duke has an article on the advantages women have in poker.
