That’s it, I’m switching to Ubuntu. I loaded the new Live CD on my centrino notebook and the wireless worked flawlessly without me having to fiddle with anything.

Also looks like getting Beagle running on Hoary will be cake.

I’ve been a long time Red Hat/Fedora user and I still think it’s a very solid distribution. However, the pain of trying to get the right mix of yum repositories in order to get all the packages for multimedia, mono apps, etc. is often too much to bear. I find myself constantly adding new repositories, disabling old ones, forcing/nodeps, etc. just to get some app installed. I would love to see Red Hat include Mono and mono-based apps such as tomboy, f-spot, muine, beagle (when it’s ready), but I don’t see that happening any time soon. Having said all that, I have great respect for the Red Hat development team and think they are doing some amazing and groundbreaking work on the Linux Desktop along with Novell and the rest of the community. I just think I am ready for a change and Ubuntu seems like the right balance for me.

Update: I guess I spoke too soon. A little birdy at Red Hat informed me that Mono is in rawhide and will be in Fedora Core 4. This is great news. I’ll probably keep Fedora Core on my desktop at home and move to Ubuntu on my notebook that way I experience the best of both worlds.

  1. very torn on this…i was set to make the change but started hearing some very negative comments on ubuntu…including:

    1. too many services turned on by default (obviously any idiot can turn them off via a gnome dialog).

    2. runs slow.

    3. requires too many packages to be brought in from vanilla debian repositories (thus violating the ubuntu ease-of-use, package purity issues).

not sure if you have found any of this.

agree with you about fedora repos. i have to run yum and apt to get “full coverage”…somewhat annoying…although rpm is the predominant package format for better or for worse, not sure i want to drop an rpm-based distro for a .deb based distro. most 3rd party coders (sourceforge, etc) seem to offer .rpms if they offer packages at all.

  2. Well, I’m not an expert but in my opinion ubuntu is an excelent distro for the desktop I’m usinig it now.

Install it and we’ll be waiting for your comments!

  3. Where do they come up with the names for these things LOL! ;)

  4. Ubuntu simply rocks. :) why do u use fedora core yet? :)

  5. I switched to Ubuntu after having used Debian as my main distro everywhere. To me it feels like a “Debian Optimized” :-), running fine on my two workstations, the server, and my beloved notebook
at home. The server install was very much similar to
installing Sarge. Choosing custom from the install menu installs a “pure” machine, on which one can add desired packages with apt-get. Great distro for
    desktops, work stations *and* servers.

  6. To Saludos desde Chihuahua:

What in eff sakes are you talking about? There are exactly ZERO services turned on by default. You don’t need *ANYTHING* from the debian apt repos.

Runs slow: faster than windows and fedora on all my boxes.
