Google Talk may be just the push that has been needed to make instant messaging open and non-proprietary. Well done, google. I think it’s brilliant that they even have instructions for using the Google Talk service with existing jabber clients such as gaim.

  1. This is not that great, it does not support server to server communication.
Which is the only thing that would help jabber, as of now this is only another IM service…

  2. Word is that server-to-server communication is coming in the future. Right now what makes this great is that it is a non-proprietary IM solution being offered by a major company. This is pretty huge. The biggest problem with instant messaging has been the closed, proprietary nature of it. Google developed their service on existing open standards, namely Jabber/XMPP. Google is actually encouraging you to use a third-party client if you wish by providing instructions for clients such as gaim. Can you imagine seeing such documentation from a company like AOL, Microsoft, or even Yahoo?

  3. That’s weird. I thought that since you invited me to get a gmail account, you already had one? This crap’s too confusing.

  4. I have had a gmail email account for a long time, Laura. But google just launched their new Google Talk service, which is an instant messaging service like Yahoo or AIM. Since you already have a gmail account, you should try it out sometime. Click on the link in the article.
