Daniel Negreanu has written about what he thinks are the top ten mistakes that rookies make:

  • Bluffing too much.
  • Lack of patience.
  • Playing unaffordable limits.
  • Drinking alcohol while playing.
  • Quitting while you’re ahead.
  • Playing in tough games.
  • Elevated ego.
  • Playing too many hands.
  • Playing on tilt.
  • Playing too many hours.

Daniel expounds on these points in Rookie mistakes lead to disappointing games. I think I’ve made all of these mistakes at one time or another.

  1. You mean you’re not supposed to drink while playing holdem? That explains so much…

  2. But alcohol helps me think! I will atest to the lack of patience bit, though. I was heads up at pokerpub and ended up in second place because I went all in on a mediocre hand. I had been way behind my opponent, and scratched clawed my way to being almost even with him. But, it was taking forever, I got frustrated, and when he raised I re-raised all in on a hand I really should have folded (and probably would have earlier in the game).
