Daniel Negreanu has written about what he thinks are the top ten mistakes that rookies make:
- Bluffing too much.
- Lack of patience.
- Playing unaffordable limits.
- Drinking alcohol while playing.
- Quitting while you’re ahead.
- Playing in tough games.
- Elevated ego.
- Playing too many hands.
- Playing on tilt.
- Playing too many hours.
Daniel expounds on these points in Rookie mistakes lead to disappointing games. I think I’ve made all of these mistakes at one time or another.

But alcohol helps me think! I will atest to the lack of patience bit, though. I was heads up at pokerpub and ended up in second place because I went all in on a mediocre hand. I had been way behind my opponent, and scratched clawed my way to being almost even with him. But, it was taking forever, I got frustrated, and when he raised I re-raised all in on a hand I really should have folded (and probably would have earlier in the game).
