  1. It seems to think I’m in the right field. I do hate people, so it got that sociology thing right, too.

  2. 100%? wow, I’m impressed! But programming may not be all that far of a stretch if logic was the branch of philosophy…

  3. I should have been a sociology major! Too late now. Anyway, I enjoyed studying literature. No regrets.

  4. Ron: when I stop and think about it, programming (at least the kind I do) may actually be a good compromise in some respects. I started out studying computer engineering and realized that I didn’t enjoy taking things down to the level of the transistor. So I switched to computer science and realized that I didn’t care for the “science” part of it, or the fact that the computer science department was in the engineering school at WashU. The odd thing is that I loved math and science in high school but when I got to college I discovered that what I really wanted to do was use existing technology to create something much more than try to build something up from transistors and 1’s and 0’s.

So I love the logic (philosophy) and poetry (literature) of programming.

  5. I got 100% for Philosophy and Engineering, and juding by these posts, it seems many programmers may score high in philosophy as well. I think that this is because deep down, philosophy is about logic and figuring out the structure of the world, which is quite similar to programming, which is about the logic and structure of a program.
    Funny how that works out.
I wonder what kind of philosophers techies would make…

  6. There’s actually a pretty large field of philosophy of technology. I remember reading some speaches by the guy that developed Perl - can’t remember his name, but I’m sure you know who I’m talking about. I’d say he is very much into the poetry of programming.

  7. Ah yes, Larry Wall. He’s great. There was a pretty good interview on /. a while back which you can read here. He talks about Perl, the philosophy of programming languages, and his faith (Christianity).

  8. yep - That’s the guy!

  9. I scored as a biology/chem major - how perfect, english, theatre and philosophy were at the bottom of my list like at 5%.
