This guy did an interesting 1-month experiment:
For the month of November, I’m only spending $30 on food. The only exception will be things that are freely available to the average person (salt taken from restaurants, sauce packets from Taco Bell, free coffee from an office). Buying in advance is fine, but at the end of the month, it all has to add up to $30 or less.
Start at the bottom of the page and read upward. He has some interesting insights along the way.
In complete contrast to hot dogs and ramen noodles, here’s a list of “Superfoods” to complete a healthy diet.

I did the Ramen Noodle Soup diet. It was nasty but it helped me get to Portland. Ahhhh the sacrifices we make.

This was an interesting link, Jamin. Not to be too critical of the guy, because I think it would be difficult to eat on $1/day, but I think he could have created a more flavorful/nutritional diet for himself. Starchy foods are filling, but there is so little nutrition in all that white food he was describing. And some of it sounded downright nasty.
Vegetables are incredibly cheap at farmers’ markets, and there are various proteins that are relatively inexpensive - eggs, for instance.
